Welcome to Vernal

When you move it can be very stressful and traumatic, no matter how short the distance. When you relocate from one part of the country to another it is even more difficult. You are moving into the unknown, you probably don't know about the different neighborhoods, how good the schools are or even what the climate is like.

What does Vernal have to offer?

Vernal is located within Uintah County, Utah, United States. The population was 7,714 at the 2000 census but has since doubled that number due to the oil and gas boom. Vernal is also the county seat of Uintah County. The Vernal City Airport has scheduled air service to Denver and Salt Lake City provided by Great Lakes Aviation. This air service is subsidized by the Essential Air Service program.

Many people do not know that Vernal is the largest cities in the United States without a railway. One was proposed in the past, with a railway station being built. There is still a railway approximately 60 miles away from city limits. The only operating railroad in Uintah County is being used for coal being delivered to the power plant and the transportation of gilsonite, a former major part of the economy in the area.

The Vernal area is in a fossil fuel boom, bringing great amounts of economy to the area.  Many of the people moving to Vernal come by way of oil related careers.  However, not all jobs in Vernal are oil field related.  Other major employers are the Uintah School District, Uintah County, Vernal City, U.S. Government, National Parks and Recreation, BLM, food service and major retail.

Fast food restaurants include Wendy’s, Arby’s, McDonald’s, Burger King, Subway, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Gandolfo’s, A&W, Pizza Hut, TacoBell, Blimpe, TacoTime and a variety of local independent restaurants.

The Vernal area also enjoys sit down style restaurants including, JB’s, Stockman’s, Wingers, Win-On Chinese, Canton City, Casa Rio’s, LaCabana, Don Pedro’s Mexican and other local eateries.

Because of the oil boom in the area, national retailers have begun construction on many major commercial projects.  The largest of the projects include the Uintah Gateway Mall and the Vernal Towne Centre.

Retail Shopping facilities include Super WalMart, K-Mart, Lowe’s Home Improvement, JC Penny Catalog, Family Dollar, DollarTree, GameStop, Sears and many localized retailers.

Hotel and Motel establishments include Marriott Summerfield, Marriot Hawthorne Suites, EconoLodge, Motel 6, Holiday Inn Express, Days, Inn, Best Western, Landmark Inn, Roadway Inn, Weston Plaza Hotel and the Lamplighter Hotel.

Many businesses and hotels have been proposed including, Home Depot, Costco, LaQuinta Hotels, Comfort Inn and Suits, The Olive Garden, Target, Café Rio and others.  Although these businesses have not been officially announced, they have shown interest in the Vernal market.

Vernal's schools include Ashley Valley Education Center, Uintah High, Vernal Junior High, Vernal Middle, Ashley Elementary, Discovery Elementary, and a branch of Utah State University. Uintah School District built two new elementary schools in 2007; Maeser and Naples Elementary in the nearby communities to accommodate increased enrollment and eliminate unsafe older buildings. Other area schools include Davis Elementary, Lapoint Elementary, and Eagle View Elementary.
